I Have Not Tasted My Last First
I Have Not Tasted My Last First
Poem by Christa Wells
I want to believe
there is more than I can imagine
here and not here
now and later
tangible and intangible.
I want to believe
that all my fantastic dreams
have not yet come close
to the crest,
if there is one.
I want to believe
I have not tasted my last
first brambleberry crisp ice cream
or opened the final gift beneath the tree
with my name on it.
I pass no judgment against myself
for this greediness,
this essence of aliveness
which does not counter contentment
but reinvents it
I am quite content, for example,
to lay idle for three hours
in a matted meadow or my own flanneled bed,
aware and listening,
anticipating in stillness
the singular meteorite
of new thought
that may at any moment
pierce the veil
of my understanding
It always comes.
And just like that
the earth opens
and the landscape of my life
will never be the same.
I dream of meteorites
as some wait for weekends,
not knowing a greater bliss
than a destined disruption
to the perimeter of possibility.
